Temple Nurses and Professionals Win Unemployment Compensation Decision

The Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals (PASNAP) has been notified that an initial determination has been made in the union's claim for unemployment compensation for the duration of the 28-day work stoppage at Temple University Hospital during the month of April.

After more than two months of reviewing the case, the Pennsylvania Unemployment Compensation Board ruled that illegal unilateral changes made to employee working conditions by Temple prior to the strike on March 31 rendered such work stoppage a lockout. Jennifer Taylor, RN has been a nurse for 20 years. She has been a front line caregiver at Temple University Hospital’s ER since 2006. Health care professionals Charlene Scott, who has 18 years of experience, and Carolyn Szewczykowski, 8 years of experience, are Medical Technologists in Temple’s Clinical Laboratory.

The 1,000 Registered Nurses and 500 health professionals at Temple University Hospital heal wounds, treat illness and save lives 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. These dedicated professionals work diligently to serve a community with complicated health issues. They contribute their experience and skills to life-saving, cutting edge surgical procedures and organ transplants. They are among the best of the best.

Now, Temple executives, including Temple President Ann Weaver Hart, are attacking the very professionals that make Temple a world class medical center. It doesn’t make any sense.
